Apple sued over 'shrinking' gadget storage

Apple is facing a lawsuit for not telling users about the amount of memory required by its flagship operating system. The legal complaint revolves around iOS 8 and the amount of memory it reserves for itself on iPods, iPhones and iPads. The complaint alleges that it takes up so much space that far less than advertised is left for people to store their own data. Apple has yet to issue any official comment on the lawsuit. Update upset The complaint has been filed in California by Miami residents Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara who say that iOS 8 can occupy up to 23.1% of the memory available on some Apple devices. In addition, upgrading devices from the earlier iOS 7 to 8 can cause people to lose up to 1.3 gigabytes of memory, said papers filed in support of the legal action. The amount of memory taken up by iOS 8 can mean users run out of storage and, the pair allege, this is helping Apple force people to sign up for its fee-based iCloud storage system. The lawsuit is seeking millions of dollars in damages for those using Apple devices facing the storage squeeze. So far, Apple has not responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit. The latest upgrade to iOS 8 was released in late September but Apple was forced to withdraw and then re-issue it because the first version meant a lot of iPhone 6 and Plus handsets could no longer make calls. Apple issued a public apology over the botched update but said only 40,000 people were affected by it. Reported By BBC News http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30655176 http://www.mtvpromote.com

Prince Andrew sex case claim denied

Buckingham Palace has denied "any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors" by Prince Andrew, after he was named in US court papers. A woman named him in documents she filed in a Florida court over how prosecutors handled a case against financier Jeffrey Epstein. She claims that between 1999 and 2002 she was forced by Epstein to have sex with the prince when she was a minor. The palace said it would not comment in detail on the legal proceedings. But a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "This relates to long-standing and ongoing civil proceedings in the United States, to which the Duke of York is not a party. "As such we would not comment on the detail. However, for the avoidance of doubt, any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue". line Analysis By Peter Hunt, BBC royal correspondent This is a long-running, complicated legal action which began in 2011 against an American businessman called Jeffrey Epstein who has served 18 months in prison for soliciting a minor for prostitution. Back in 2011 Prince Andrew had to apologise for his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. In these court documents, for the first time, an unnamed woman alleges she was forced to have sexual relations with Prince Andrew when she was a minor, three times in three different locations. He is paying a heavy price for his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein which he acknowledged at the time was a mistake on his part. It is interesting Buckingham Palace issued this statement in the first place because in the past the Palace would not have commented on such things, they would just hope they'd go away. Given that it was on the Politico website, it was on other national newspaper websites, I think they felt they had no choice but to make it very clear that this denial was "absolute, total and emphatic", as one of the people close to him said to me. The woman says she was forced to have sexual relations with the prince in London, New York and on a private Caribbean island owned by Epstein. The accusation is contained in a motion filed in a Florida court this week, which is part of a legal case over how federal prosecutors handled the case of Epstein. The court document, first reported on by Politico Magazine, alleges: "Epstein also sexually trafficked the then-minor Jane Doe (a name used in US legal proceedings for people with anonymity), making her available for sex to politically connected and financially powerful people. "Epstein's purposes in 'lending' Jane Doe (along with other young girls) to such powerful people were to ingratiate himself with them for business, personal, political, and financial gain, as well as to obtain potential blackmail information." Sony cyber-attack: North Korea faces new US sanctions

The US has imposed new sanctions on North Korea in response to a cyber-attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment. The White House said President Barack Obama signed an executive order on Friday sanctioning three North Korean organisations and 10 individuals. The White House said the move was a response to North Korea's "provocative, destabilising, and repressive actions". US sanctions are already in place over North Korea's nuclear program. AirAsia QZ8501: Search teams find more bodies at sea

More bodies have been recovered from the Java Sea, five days after AirAsia flight QZ8501 crashed, bringing the total found so far to 30, Indonesian rescue officials say. The Airbus A320 disappeared with 162 people on board while flying from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore. Operations to recover victims continue but no survivors have been found. Specialist equipment has arrived to aid the search for the plane itself and its "black box" flight recorders. However officials said it could not be used on Friday because of high waves, Reuters reported. The plane is almost certainly at the bottom of the relatively shallow Java Sea. The cause of the crash is not known yet. 'Strapped in seats' Some 20 more bodies were found on Friday, as a massive search operation in the presumed crash area continued. Some were reported to be still strapped into their seats. The aircraft's fuselage has still not been located, and it is thought most of the passengers could be inside. "Waves were between three and four metres today, making it difficult to load bodies onto ships and [move them] between ships," the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency said. Bambang Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta that some vessels would search through the night. "Tonight we are sending tug boats which should make the [body] transfers easier." He estimated the fuselage was at a depth of about 25-30m (80-100ft). In a statement, AirAsia confirmed only that 22 bodies had been found, adding: "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and friends of our passengers and colleagues on board QZ8501." The bodies recovered from the sea are being taken to Surabaya in numbered coffins. Four people have been identified so far. They include a flight attendant and a four-year-old boy. The boss of Air Asia, Tony Fernandes, tweeted that he would accompany the body of one victim home from Surabaya. "I cannot describe how I feel. There are no words," he said. Several pieces of debris have been recovered, including what is thought to be part of a wing flap. Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue. The BBC's Alice Budisatrijo in Surabaya: "Their main priority is just to get the bodies of their loved ones back" The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Pangkalan Bun says there is a growing sense among search teams that their task is going to be harder than initially thought. Bad weather and churning seas have dashed hopes of finding the plane visually, he says, and teams will now be relying on scans of the sea floor. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-30658877 Reported by BBC News

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - When a familiar face in downtown Nashville was recently hospitalized, two men stepped up to find his family. Local homeless man David Milliken is now at the ICU at Nashville General, but thanks to the hard work of two men, he'll soon to be reunited with a family he hasn't seen in nearly 20 years. "What I find really, really interesting is the human connection," said Jerry Craddock, of Murfreesboro. Picking up clothes to carry to those in need, Craddock and friend Scott Walker said they started doing black and white photography of the local homeless to tell stories you don't always hear. They said one of the most special of those stories is that of Milliken. "Whenever we'd bring him anything, he'd say, 'Thanks! God bless you!,'" Walker said. "He always had a big smile on his face." "When you leave, he'll stop you and say, 'Hey, hey, love you man!'" Craddock added. From his bench downtown where you'd always find him, Milliken had his back to the capitol, faced the library and listened to the constant sound of a fountain in the distance. When Craddock and Walker didn't find him last week in an area they've come to know as Camp David, they knew something was wrong. "Police found him early the day after Christmas, and he was unresponsive," Walker said. "He had frost bite. He had severe pneumonia and staph infection." "He'd shown up with a core temperature of 90 degrees," Craddock said. "He had low blood pressure, high blood sugar. I just so wanted him to roll over and look through that glass and see us there because I think that human connection can be healing." Craddock and Walker took to Facebook trying to find Milliken's family. "My post was shared I don't know how many times all over the place," Walker said. "Finally someone contacted me and said, 'I know his family.'" That was an incredible call for Milliken's brother, Tyrone Kendall, who said he hadn't seen his brother since 1996 and wasn't even sure he was alive. "We didn't know what happened to him or what was going on with him," Kendall said. "Glad to know where he's at, and we can finally come and check on him and go from there." A family soon to be reunited, Craddock and Walker are waiting for they day they can snap a new shot of Milliken's smiling face again. "They're going to be able to know the closing of this story," Walker said. "They're going to find out where he'd been all these years. They're going to find out people loved him, people watched out for him, people walked by every day and prayed for him." "It makes you feel good to know you touched somebody's life and hopefully helped them in a positive way," Craddock added. Kendall said he lives in west Tennessee and plans to come visit his brother this Saturday. Family rebuilding after losing home in Christmas Day fire Read more: family rebuilding after losing home in christmas day fire

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A mid-state family is rebuilding their lives after fire destroyed their home on Christmas Day. MORE Special Click to read more headlines from Davidson County. Investigators: Christmas Day fire was arson, neighbors charged Woman battling cancer loses home in fire Investigators have arrested the couple's neighbors for arson. Ingrid Hunter, who is battling stage IV cervical cancer, and her husband, Shawn Hunter, are in good spirits considering all they have lost. They said they are pleased the people who allegedly set the fire are behind bars. "I knew something wasn't right," Ingrid Hunter said. But Ingrid Hunter said she never expected her intuition would lead to her family losing everything and spending the holidays in a hotel room. "I was devastated," she said. "My 10-year-old daughter cried herself to sleep that night." On Christmas Day, Ingrid Hunter had just left the hospital. She was headed home to spend the holiday with her family. By the time she arrived at her north Nashville home, the damage was already done. Police arrested Norman Hunt and Kimberly Adams, the Hunters' neighbors, and charged them with arson. Ingrid Hunter said Adams moved in a few months ago, and from the first day, she shared concerns about the woman with her landlord. "I kept telling the landlord something's not right," she said. "He was like, 'We'll figure it out.' I called the police on the lady time after time because they always played loud music." Investigators said Hunt and Adams were in the process of being evicted when they set the fire. "We're just blessed we're here," Shawn Hunter said. "I hope that they're handled to the fullest extent of the law. But in our heart, there is not really any hate for them because we don't know them." Hunt and Adams are each being held on $25,000 bond. They are expected to be in court Friday. "I can rest a lot easier knowing that she is behind bars," Ingrid Hunter said. "I just hope they keep her there... so she'll never be able to hurt anybody like she's hurt us."
